SSARPC Town Meeting Now January 11

The Town Meeting has been rescheduled from January 4 to Thursday, January 11.  It will be held at Sherwood High School and will start at 7:00 PM.  The reasons for the change are:

  • One of the primary presenters will be away until right before the meeting and this doesn’t give the person much time for last minute preparations.
  • Members of the SSARPC Steering Committee recently met with employees of the Montgomery County Park and Planning Commission.  Park and Planning employees have brought up issues of encroachment on the wetlands, parking and traffic concerns.  The Steering Committee would like to have time to digest some of these issues and understand their impact, even though it is doubtful that they will be remedied by January 11th.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

SSARPC Changes Co-Chair

Beth Garrettson and Paul Mannina have been co-chairing the SSARPC Steering Committee for over a year.  Beth has resigned as co-chair.  Beth brought a strong knowledge of the history of the area to the organization.  She grew up in the area, and after being away for a number of years, returned to live in Sandy Spring.  Paul said “Beth is a delight to work with and I look forward to continuing a strong relationship that we have built together.”  Beth always encouraged people to examine where they stood on issues, encouraged them to speak their mind, and was able to look at the diversity of input and work towards a consensus.  Beth is missed in her role as co-chair, but we expect her to continue as a strong member of the group and wish her the best in all the other various activities she has taken on.

Michelle Layton, of Ashton, has taken Beth’s position as co-chair.  Michelle has lived in the Ashton area for 17 years.  She has been an advocate of supporting the Master Plan and creating a commercial area that is rural in nature, and has been a member of the Steering Committee since it began.

Upcoming Events

The following is a schedule of upcoming events:

November 29, Wednesday:  Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett is having a town meeting to hear from the people in this area.  His meeting is being held at the Olney Elementary School, 3401 Queen Mary Drive in Olney, at 7:30 PM.  We hope that you are able to attend the Ike Leggett meeting, where you’ll also be able to speak with SSARPC Steering Committee members about any questions that you may have.

January 11, Thursday:  The SSARPC Steering Committee is holding a Town Meeting at Sherwood High School starting at 7:00.   Presentations will be given on the current status of the Ashton Meeting Place (AMP) as well as topics such as the northeast corner and the southwest area.   Individual opinions will be solicited as part of the meeting.  We hope that you will be able to attend!

January 21, Sunday:  We hope you can join the SSARPC Steering Committee for a dinner at the Historic Cedars honoring some of the team who have performed work for free or at reduced rates.  Donations are $100 per person. The funds will help cover the costs of SSARPC’s attorney and city planner.  For more information, send email to SSARPC.reservations@verizon.net or call 301-570-9065.
